Suicide. One simple word, but it means so much. This one little word can ruin lives, cause tears, and be a very bad example for young adults. But what does suicide mean, why do so many young people turn to it, and can it be prevented? The simple answer to the last one is yes, but it is so much more complex than that. Suicide means killing oneself.Sui-self, Cide-To kill, Suicide-To kill oneself. Not a great defination, but it fits my purposes quite nicely for now.Suicide is one of the leading causes of death among young people, the other leading causes being Car Accidents and Disease.
Can suicide be prevented? Well yes, it most certainly can. Suicide Awareness and Prevention day is very helpful.Talking to suicidal people, and keeping them talking, keeping them okay until you can get help.Getting them help. Talking to professionals.Even, and I hate to say it because I personally do not like it, hospitalizing can be helpful, but that can also be harmful. Being a friend helps. Talking openly about it. If they want to talk, let them talk. If someone comes up to you and says they see no point in living, get them talking. Ask them why, tell them they have reasons to live for, even if the topic makes you uncofortable change the subject. Make them laugh, smile, show them that someone loves them and someone cares alot about them. There are many suicide preventiong sites out there, my favorite being the yellow ribbon project.
It's quite simple really. People will be people, they will get upset or angry or tired of living, and they will need someone by their side, to hold them up when all hope is gone, to keep them goijng through each day. Suicide effects everyone, it effects the family of the one who passed on, it effects their friends and schoolmates, it effects everyone. No one is safe from the damaging effects of suicide, so maybe it's time we prevent it.

Hi Casey,Yours is a sad but true article. I fear that parents have failed their children in many ways. Most parents try to heap every gift and all goodies upon their children and never give them responsibilities. This causes a child to become irresponsible and if never taught that suicide, or other killing is sin, they have little to make them hesitate to commit it. Thanks for sharing this article with us.
Casey, thanks for your insight. It is important to be a sounding board for teenagers and young adults. They need to hear that they matter and that they are special. They need to be included in meaningful community and family activities so they can see that their talents make a difference. Best wishes to you.
